about us

Global Village Collection is a Fair Trade, non-profit, volunteer supported retail store featuring handcrafted items from around the globe! We are located in downtown Delaware, Ohio at 37 N. Sandusky Street.

We strive to support farmers and artisans in developing countries who are struggling to receive fair payment for their work or products. We provide events and programming to the greater Delaware community in hopes of increasing awareness regarding unfair trading practices. We seek to expand community members' understanding of unjust global trading issues and of how they have influence and can initiate change through their purchases.

Purchases at Global Village Collection help to provide a sustainable and fair economic system for the artisans and farmers who would not otherwise have access to our marketplace. We are fully committed to Fair Trade; every product in our store is Fair Trade certified.

Fair trade is not about charity. It is a holistic approach to trade and development that aims to alter the ways in which commerce is conducted, so that trade can empower the poorest of the poor. Fair Trade organizations seek to create sustainable and positive change in developing and developed countries.

Global Village Collection is a Fair Trade, non-profit, volunteer supported retail store featuring handcrafted items from around the globe! We have been promoting Fair Trade for over eighteen years. It all started in the 1980’s with some families at Asbury United Methodist Church who were interested in purchasing nativity sets that would help others. From there the effort gained momentum as a variety of items were ordered from SERRV International, a nonprofit organization with more than 60 years supporting economic development of farmers and artisans. Also around this time, the Chaplain’'s Office at Ohio Wesleyan University had been hosting the sale of UNICEF (United Nations International Children'’s Education Funds) greeting cards. In the weeks before Christmas 1991, the two groups collaborated with the Ecumenical Youth Group of Delaware and its partner churches to open the first Fair Trade pilot store as a catalog showroom in the vacated mailroom of the former Memorial Union at Ohio Wesleyan.The idea of a year-round store became a reality with the opening of Global Village Collection. In November 1992, with the diligent work of over 200 volunteers, GVC opened a temporary store on West Winter Street in the current location of Bun’s. It was resoundingly supported by the community. The next year a permanent location was found at 37 N. Sandusky Street.The legacy and mission of Global Village Collection is twofold. We work hard to maintain a successful retail entity so that we can continue to provide impoverished farmers and artisans from around the world with a fair income. Secondly, we endeavor to be a voice in the Delaware community; we provide educational programming to increase understanding regarding unfair trading practices, reasons fueling this injustice, and how purchases can positively impact and change the status quo.In 2002, the Global Village Collection became a member of the Fair Trade Federation.

Chocolate companies using cocoa harvested by child slaves include Cargill, Archer Daniels Midland Mars, Hersheys, Nestle, Barry Callebaut, Saf-Cacao, and others. This documentary shows the injustice that occurs to bring the U.S. a significant majority of its chocolate. Contact us at info_globalvillagecollection.orgTriangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire - 1911"On March 25th, 1911, a fire broke out in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York's Greenwich Village. The blaze ripped through the congested loft; huge piles of trimmings fed the flames. Petrified workers desperately tried to make their way downstairs, but the factory owners kept the doors on the 9th floor locked and the woefully inadequate fire escape soon crumpled. Hundreds of horrified on-lookers arrived just in time to see young men and women jumping from the windows. By the time the fire had burned itself out, 146 people were dead. Less than two years earlier, the workers of the factory had been leaders in an industry-wide strike to protest dismal wages and dangerous working conditions. Despite unlikely support from some of the wealthiest women in the city, including Anne Morgan, most of the workers returned to their shops without having their demands met. It took the tragedy of the fire and the ensuing public outrage to force government action. The landmark legislation that followed gave New Yorkers the most comprehensive workplace safety laws in the country."-PBSFor even more of the story click here.Safe PassageCamino SeguroThis is a school program providing assistance to children and families who work in the Guatemala City Garbage Dump. A portion from the sales of our Safe Passage coffee blend is donated to this program.The following is from their website:"Safe Passage enables the children enrolled in our program to attend Guatemalan public school by providing financial support to cover costs of enrollment, school supplies, and uniforms. Our Educational Reinforcement Center is where these school-age children come for a hot meal, homework help, medical care, sports and art programming, and a safe place to socialize. Additionally, our Early Education Program and Adult Literacy Program offer similar resources for the pre-school-aged children as well as mother and fathers living and working in the dump and surrounding neighborhoods. Our programs are designed so that each child and parent can gain the skills needed to obtain stable jobs, to be self-sufficient, and to lead their families out of poverty in a dignified and permanent way."

Two of our Fair Trade suppliers: Chris Treter, the founder of our Higher Grounds coffee, and Tim Young, the founder of our Food For Thought products, were the thinkers and organizors of this successful project.The team (10 runners) collectively raised over $208,000 to build three schools in areas where a little more than half of the region's children complete primary school; two schools were built in the Yirgacheffe region and another near Addis Ababa.Efforts to improve life and alleviate poverty in these areas is far from finished.
